The Swag has collected national accolades over the years for its setting and hospitality, and it joined Relais and Chateaux in 2020. Current owners bought it in 2018 and have been steadily updating the property while preserving its handmade, mountain-lodge character.

Stay craft: plan at least two nights, since getting up the mountain is part of the commitment. Ask for a room facing the long views, take a picnic lunch onto the trails, and leave one day for a drive to Cataloochee Valley in the national park to look for elk. Bring layers — it is much cooler on top than in Asheville.

Practicals: near Waynesville, about 40 minutes west of Asheville; meals for two included; reservations required; seasonal, closing after Thanksgiving until spring. Fit: couples and outdoors travelers seeking a truly secluded mountain escape.
